The Real Challenges of Leadership

Although being a high-performing leader is crucial for success, leadership isn't just about having the right skills or hitting targets. It's about how you manage yourself and interact with others in your pursuit of great results. Poor self-awareness and ineffective interpersonal skills can derail even the most talented leader.

Leaders are often hired for their IQ, expertise, and track records. However, studies show they get fired for deficiencies in self-management, such as lacking collaboration, emotional intelligence, resistance to feedback, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. It is well established that micromanaging, bullying, and indecisiveness can destroy team performance (and a leader’s career).

Exploring Your Personality: The Secret to Becoming a High-Impact Leader

Personality drives how we act and what impressions we leave on others. Psychologists have defined personality as "the most outstanding impressions you create" (Lindzey) and "the pattern and regularity of behavior" (Cattell).

We often think of personality as fixed, like IQ. But in reality, the manifestation of our personality is surprisingly malleable. That's because our personality shines through our behavior, which we can actually control and change. This means how we interact with others, and the image we project, are within our grasp. For leaders, where success hinges on how others perceive them, this is game-changing.

As a result, a better measure of success for any leader is the quality of the impact their behavior is having on those they lead. The best way to assess their impact is (1) through a combination of honest self-assessment and rater feedback provided by those at the receiving end of your behavior and (2) through an expert 1-on-1 coaching process to help make sense of the data and turn this information into actionable behaviors that will serve as the base for new leadership habits.

LMAP 360® Personality: A Different Kind of Feedback Instrument

LMAP 360® personality instrument goes beyond numbers and bar charts. Developed by world-renowned personality expert Dr. Ron Warren, it provides actionable feedback in plain language, like a coaching conversation. Think of it as a narrative that highlights strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots in a clear and understandable way.

LMAP 360® assessments are rigorous and scientifically validated, meeting or exceeding American Psychological Association (APA) standards. Its robust metrics and methods are based on large, diverse samples, ensuring accurate and reliable results. This makes this research-based assessment a preferred leadership development tool for advanced executive education programs at Yale School of Management® Harvard Business School® and Cornell Johnson College of Business®

LMAP Pulse®: Keeping Leaders and Teams Accountable

Leadership development isn't a one-time event. It's a journey of consistent practice, feedback, and refinement. That’s why we include the use of LMAP Pulse® (a series of follow-up micro assessments) as a continuous feedback loop that helps leaders and teams track progress on specific Leadership Development Goals (LDGs). It's a quick, targeted survey that focuses on real-world behavioral changes, not endless data analysis. LMAP Pulse® keeps the momentum going, ensuring that you don't just read a report but actually take action and grow!

The LMAP 360® Leadership Coaching is Ideal for a Leader Who:

  • Wants to gain a comprehensive understanding of their strengths and weaknesses as a leader, as perceived by their colleagues, direct reports, and supervisors.

  • Is committed to personal and professional development and is open to feedback, even if it's challenging.

  • Values building strong relationships with their team and stakeholders and wants to foster a culture of open communication and feedback.

  • Recognizes that leadership is a journey, not a destination, and is committed to continuous learning and growth.

Leaders at All Levels Can Benefit From LMAP 360® Leadership Coaching:

  • Emerging Leaders: Individuals taking on their first leadership role or transitioning to a new team.

    • Benefit: Provides valuable feedback on their initial leadership impact and helps them identify areas for development early on.

  • Mid-Level Leaders: Leaders managing teams and seeking to refine their leadership style.

    • Benefit: Offers diverse perspectives from various stakeholders, helping them gauge their effectiveness and adjust their approach if needed.

  • Senior Leaders: Executives looking to solidify their leadership impact at an organizational level and identify any potential blind spots caused by large scale operations or siloed organizational structures.

    • Benefit: Offers 360-degree feedback from a wider range of stakeholders, including peers, downline employees several levels below their director reports, and external partners and clients, providing a holistic view of their leadership effectiveness.

Additional Applications Include:

  • Leaders experiencing derailment: Feedback is always important, but it is particularly crucial at times when a leader’s effectiveness is declining or is struggling to overcome unprecedented challenges.

  • Leaders considering a career transition: This assessment can help them understand how their leadership skills are perceived across different contexts and prepare for new challenges.

  • Leaders undergoing significant organizational changes: It can gauge employee sentiment and identify areas where leadership needs to adapt to support the change effectively.

  • Setting up the LMAP 360® process: We'll guide you through the LMAP 360® questionnaire, ensuring you select the right raters to provide valuable insights into your leadership behaviors.

Session 2: LMAP 360® Report Analysis (60 minutes)

  • Deep analysis of your LMAP 360® report: Your personalized report will be the roadmap for your leadership development. We'll dissect it together, exploring your key strengths, areas for improvement, and how your leadership is perceived by others. We’ll spend a significant amount of time discussing and making sense of any gaps between your self-rating and the ratings of others. Lastly, we’ll pinpoint your current standing as a leader in your organization.

  • Leadership Development Goal: Using the 3:2:1 growth model, we'll identify your top three strengths, the two most impactful opportunities for growth, and one overarching leadership development goal to anchor your journey. This will provide a laser-focused strategy that can be achievable and measurable.

  • Setting up the LMAP Pulse® process: To track your progress, we'll introduce the LMAP Pulse® - a micro-assessment that gathers ongoing feedback from your chosen raters. You'll share your leadership development goal with them, fostering accountability and support.

Session 3: LMAP Pulse® Report #1 (45 minutes)

  • Assess the feedback from the first LMAP Pulse® report: After 60 days, we'll analyze your initial LMAP Pulse® feedback, understanding how your leadership behaviors are resonating with your stakeholders.

  • Discuss strategies for immediate course correction or sustainment: Based on the feedback, we'll tailor strategies to either address gaps or reinforce your positive behaviors, propelling you closer to your leadership development goal.

Session 4: LMAP Pulse® Report #2 (45 minutes)

  • Assess the feedback from the second LMAP Pulse® report: 90 days into the program, we'll analyze your final LMAP Pulse® feedback, measuring your progress and celebrating your achievements.

  • Discuss strategies for long-term growth and behavior change: Equipped with valuable insights and sustained feedback, we'll map out your path for long-term leadership development, ensuring continued growth and impact.

Throughout the program, you'll gain:

  • Deeper self-awareness: Understand your leadership strengths, blind spots, and how you're perceived by others.
